Welke standpunten nemen internationale mensenrechtenorganisaties sinds 2000 in over enkele aspecten van de behandeling van migrantenin Nederland? Hoe reageerden pers en politiek daarop? En werd iets met deze kritiek gedaan? Drie omstandigheden illustreren het belang van deze vragen. Sinds 2002 verandert het overheidsbeleid inzake immigranten voortdurend. Vanaf dat jaar hebben achtereenvolgende regeringen grenzen afgetast. Een interessante vraag is hoe recente maatregelen zich verhoudentot internationale mensenrechtenverdragen. Daarnaast zien we een opmerkelijke consensus tussen de politieke partijen. Zo werden debelangrijkste maatregelen, afgekondigd tussen 2000 - 2008, ondanks onderlinge meningsverschillen over modaliteiten, door de politici van (bijna) alle politieke partijen gesteund. Echter, verdragen over mensenrechtenmaken duidelijk dat ook breed gedragen besluiten van vertegenwoordigende organen moeten voldoen aan bepaalde minimumeisen. Juist bij de bescherming van de rechten van minderheden.Dominique van Dam onderzocht het effect van internationaal toezicht op wetgeving en beleidten aanzien van migranten in Nederland. Daaruit blijkt onder meer dat het niet eenvoudig is om die effecten los te zien van de invloed van hetgedrag van actoren als nationale en internationale mensenrechtenorganisaties,Kamerleden, adviesorganen, individuele burgers en advocaten in het vreemdelingenrecht. Het rapport sluit af met aanbevelingen aan deNederlandse regering, de Tweede Kamer en aan de belangrijkste actoren in het maatschappelijk middenveld.Het rapport werd op 17 februari 2010 aangeboden aan staatssecretaris Albayrak tijdens de conferentie 'Who's Right(s)?'
