The Dutch Reformed Church in the American Colonies remains the best study of the early years of the Reformed Church in North America. De Jongs careful account takes the readers on a fascinating journey from the establishment of a Dutch church at a mill in New Amsterdam to the early years of an indigenous American denomination. During the 16th century, many Christians in the Netherlands broke with Rome and affiliated with Calvinist Protestantism, forming the Nederlands Hervormde Kerkor, or the Dutch Reformed Church. Many of the leaders of the Dutch war for independence from Spain were a part of this church, as well as directors of the West India Company, which created the colony of New Netherland. Over 900 ordained ministers were contracted by the VOC to serve in the Dutch East Indies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, although only about 100 of them were resident pastors.
